Borrell: There are no plans to separate the EU economy from China

Despite the tensions with Beijing, the head of diplomacy of the European Union, Josep Borell, has ruled out the possibility of any economic separation from China.

"No one is talking about a separation of the European Union economy from the Chinese economy," Borrell said on Saturday in Beijing.

According to him, the trade between China and Europe is so great, that's why secession, even if someone wanted to, is not possible. Among other things, Borrell said that the goal is to reduce "excessive addiction".

Borrell has justified the EU's approach with lessons from the past, mentioning that after the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, it has been proven that "not a single gram" of paracetamol is produced in Europe anymore, due to foreign production.

China is a large producer of many medicines, "but the sources of supply should be multiplied", said Borrell, calling this step "preventive".

China is doing the same, he said. The EU is the most important market for China's exports.

However, relations between Brussels and Beijing have deteriorated due to the European bloc's ongoing investigations into Chinese subsidies to electric car makers.

The EU also intends to investigate Chinese subsidies to steel companies.

In both cases, the EU estimates that China is offering its companies unfair advantages in the EU market, as they can sell their products at lower prices than European competitors./ REL
