France steps up security after school stabbing

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne raised the national terror alert to the highest level after an attacker stabbed a teacher to death and wounded two others.

Witnesses have said that the attacker shouted "God is the greatest" during the attack at a school in Arras, northern France.

The attacker is now in custody.

The increase in the level of alert has also been practiced in other cases in the past, which have been linked to counter-terrorism.

With this decision, the number of security officials may be increased and there may be more public warnings.

Friday's attack comes amid rising tensions between France's Jewish and Muslim communities over the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin has said that "there is no doubt" about the connection between the attack in Aras and the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The attacker, identified as Mohamed Mogouchkov, 20 years old, with Russian citizenship, is of Chechen origin and known to the security services for involvement in Islamic extremism.

The police have also arrested several members of the attacker's family.

French President Emmanuel Macron visited the school and condemned the "barbarism of Islamic terrorism".

He called on the French people to be united in moments like these.

France has faced several Islamist attacks in recent years.

The worst was recorded in November 2015, when an attacker and suicide bombers attacked an area in Paris, leaving 130 people dead.

The extremist group, the Islamic State, claimed responsibility for the attack./ REL
