The ruling party leads in the Polish elections, but the opposition claims
The leader of the Polish opposition, Donald Tusk, has declared himself the winner of the elections, due to the possibility of forming a government coalition.

Poland's ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party remains the most powerful force even after Sunday's election, according to the latest polls.

However, three opposition parties are celebrating the possibility of forming a new government.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki's nationalist party won 36.8 percent of the vote, according to polls conducted by the Ipsos Institute on Sunday evening.

The liberal opposition party Civil Coalition, of former Prime Minister Donald Tusk, ranked second with 31.6 percent of the vote.

According to forecasts, the PiS party will not be able to form the government alone, in the absence of sufficient seats in the assembly.

Tusk has considered himself a winner.

"I have never been happier for second place. Poland has won, democracy has won, this is the end of the government of the PiS party", he said in the evening.

The leader of the ruling party, Jaros?aw Kaczy?ski, has said they will wait for the latest results.

The formation of the government in Poland is expected to take a long time. The final result is not expected until Tuesday.

The PiS party has faced declining popularity over its handling of high inflation, migration issues and its stance on Russia's war in Ukraine.

Two weeks ago, about 1 million people participated in protests called by the opposition, led by Tusk.

The turnout in this general election of Poland may have been the highest ever since the fall of communism in 1989 - 72.9 percent - according to Polish officials for the organization of the electoral process./ REL
