Hurricane Kiko is weakening but remains a major hurricane in the central Pacific Ocean and is expected to bring potentially life-threatening waves to Hawaii on Sunday.

As of Sunday morning, the Category 3 storm was 715 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii, packing maximum sustained winds of 115 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. It was moving west to northwest at 13 mph.

Kiko intensified into a Category 1 hurricane in the eastern Pacific earlier this week. Over the past few days, it strengthened to a Category 4 before weakening back to a Category 3.

According to the hurricane center, waves generated by Kiko are expected to reach the Big Island and Maui later Sunday.

"These waves will gradually increase and are forecast to peak along the eastern exposures of the Hawaiian Islands from late Monday through midweek, potentially producing life-threatening rip currents and rip currents," the center said.

Forecasters said it could strengthen into a tropical storm by Tuesday morning as it heads north of Hawaii. While no direct hit is expected, some rain, strong winds and rough waves are expected to affect the islands during the first half of the week./CNA
