Trump's new order: Countries that unjustly detain Americans are sponsors of

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order designating countries that unjustly detain American citizens as state sponsors of terrorism, including Iran, Afghanistan, Russia and China.

Senior administration officials told reporters on September 5 that Washington would target countries that wrongfully hold Americans, as well as those that engage in "hostage diplomacy."

"As with the list of state sponsors of terrorism, no country would want to end up on this list," US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement.

The order foresees tough measures, including sanctions, against countries that Washington believes are wrongfully detaining Americans.

Another senior US administration official told reporters that the punitive measures would be similar to those imposed on organizations that are declared terrorist.

"Today everything changes when it comes to rogue regimes and regimes that think Americans can be treated as hostages," another administration official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The US administration has said it has secured the release of 72 American citizens, including from countries such as Russia and Afghanistan.

"We've gotten a lot of people out and we're going to keep going," US President Donald Trump said on September 5.

Under the new policy, Washington will warn countries that may be placed on the new list and they will have a period of time to act before sanctions are imposed.

US officials have said they believe Russia is unjustly holding 9 Americans, while Iran is holding 8.

Russia is under additional US and European sanctions related to Russia's war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022.

Iran has been declared a state sponsor of terrorism by the United States and is under American sanctions.

Organizations lobbying for the release of American citizens held hostage or imprisoned around the world have welcomed the Trump administration's decision./ Rel
