Putin: Western troops in Ukraine would be a target of the Russian military

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that any deployment of Western forces would be a "legitimate" target for Moscow's military.

This statement made on September 5 comes a day after Kiev's allies said they are committed to deploying troops to Ukraine if an agreement is reached to end the war.

Dozens of countries, led by France and Britain, pledged to deploy a security force on land, air or sea to monitor an eventual peace agreement.

"If some troops were to appear there, especially now during the fighting, we act on the premise that they would be legitimate targets," Putin said during an economic forum held in the city of Vladivostok, in Russia's Far East.

He added that the deployment of such a force would not contribute to a long-term peace, adding that the Ukrainian military's closer relations with the West were one of what he called the "main causes" of the conflict.

Ukraine's allies have not revealed specific details of the plan, including how many troops would be involved and how different countries would contribute.

Kiev says security guarantees, backed by Western troops, are essential to any peace deal, to ensure Russia cannot launch a new offensive in the future.

Tens of thousands of people have been killed since Moscow launched its offensive in February 2022, forcing millions from their homes and devastating much of eastern and southern Ukraine.

Putin said that if an agreement can be reached, there will be no need for troops.

"If decisions are reached that will lead to peace, to long-term peace, then I simply see no reason for their presence on the territory of Ukraine. Because if agreements are reached, there should be no doubt that Russia will not respect it," he said.

Ukraine and the West cite a number of instances where Russia has violated the agreements, including the period from 2014 to 2022, when Moscow-backed separatists fought Kiev's army in the east of the country./ Rel
