Hungary investigates disappearance of key components from eight MiG fighter jets

Hungarian authorities have launched an investigation into the disappearance of key components from eight MiG-29 fighter jets, and whether these parts may have ended up in Ukraine.

Sources at Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Hungarian Service (REL) said the missing parts include electronics that control the aircraft's navigation systems and weapons.

They added that officials from the Hungarian Interior Ministry suspect that the theft of the parts may have been orchestrated by individuals inside the Kecskemet military airport, where the demobilized aircraft are parked.

Hungarian media outlet Bikk, which first reported the matter, said unknown persons had cut through the airport fences, driven onto the base and gained access to the planes.

It is thought that around 20 Soviet-era MiG-29 aircraft, which were once in service with the Hungarian Air Force, are located there.

Reports that the missing parts may have ended up in Ukraine have raised concerns about the Hungarian government's policy of not supplying weapons to Kiev, which is trying to repel Russian occupation forces.

Sources told REL that the Government has also launched an investigation to understand how the disappearance of key aircraft components was discovered.

"A police investigation is underway regarding the security breach at Kecskemet airport at the end of July, but in parallel, the Hungarian Armed Forces are also carrying out procedures to determine individual responsibilities. Due to the investigations, we are not able to provide further details," the Ministry of Defense told REL.

Ukraine inherited an aging fleet of Soviet MiG and Sukhoi aircraft and is constantly looking for parts to maintain them.

The Hungarian MiG-29 fleet was demobilized around 2010, when the aircraft were withdrawn from service and replaced by Swedish JAS 39 Gripen aircraft./ REL
