US Health Secretary: Causes of autism linked to use of a drug during pregnancy

U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s upcoming report on the causes of autism will link Tylenol use during pregnancy to the neurodevelopmental disorder and suggest that a form of folate could treat the condition, according to a published report.

Kennedy, who has promoted debunked theories about the disorder, said some of the report's conclusions could be revealed this month.

The mention of a link to Tylenol, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, would reignite a medical controversy over the use of Tylenol's active ingredient, acetaminophen, during pregnancy.

Acetaminophen is a common pain reliever and fever reducer found in a variety of medications. It is often taken during pregnancy in place of anti-inflammatory medications.

Several studies have found that prenatal exposure to painkillers increased the risk of both autism spectrum disorder and ADHD.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists previously concluded that there is no clear evidence of a link between the careful use of acetaminophen and fetal developmental problems.

Kennedy's report is also expected to identify a form of folate known as folic acid, or leucovorin, as a way to reduce autism symptoms. /CNA
