Trump targets Greenland and the Panama Canal

As he prepares to retake the White House on January 20, President-elect Donald Trump has called for the return of the Panama Canal to US control, while reiterating calls to buy Greenland from Denmark.

Greenland, the semi-autonomous Danish ice-covered territory, is once again in the target of the next American president. On Sunday, Mr Trump named the new US ambassador to Denmark.

In a post on social media he wrote that: "For reasons of National Security and Freedom around the world, the United States believes that ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity."

Republican Trump also suggested taking control of the Panama Canal. He called the tariffs imposed by Panama to use the vital shipping route "absolutely extortionate".

"If the moral and legal principles of this grand gesture of donation are not respected, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be fully returned to the United States, quickly and without any discussion," Mr. Trump said.

Rejecting Mr Trump's accusations of high tariffs, President Jose Raul Mulino said every square meter of the canal would continue to belong to Panama.

"Tariffs are not fictions. They were determined publicly in an open session, taking into account market conditions, international competition, operational costs and the needs for repair and modernization of the canal", said the president of Panama.

The Danish Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, said that Greenland is not for sale. Calls by President Trump in 2019, during his first term, to buy Greenland did not materialize.

However, his statements before assuming the presidency on January 20 have drawn the attention of some partners and allies.

This includes Canada. Mr Trump called Prime Minister Justin Trudeau a "governor", suggesting the United States could adopt its northern neighbor as he threatened the country with 25% tariffs.

While Mr. Trump's ultimate goal remains unclear, on Monday, his son, Eric Trump, posted on social media a doctored photo of the president-elect buying Canada, Greenland and the Panama Canal on the Amazon company's store./ VOA
