As millions of Ukrainians celebrate Christmas Day, Russia has launched a major missile and drone attack on the country's energy infrastructure.

President Zelensky says Russia made a "deliberate choice" to launch attacks on Christmas.

He says more than 70 missiles were launched, plus 100 drones. More than 50 missiles were shot down.

"Any massive Russian strike takes time to prepare. It is never a spontaneous decision. It is a conscious choice not only of targets, but also of time and date.

Today, Putin deliberately chose Christmas for an attack. What could be more inhumane? More than 70 missiles, including ballistic ones, and more than 100 attack drones. The targets are our energy sector. They continue to fight for a blackout in Ukraine.

According to preliminary data, our defenders managed to shoot down more than 50 missiles and a significant part of drones. Unfortunately, there are hits. So far, there are outages in some regions. Power crews are working to restore power as soon as possible.

In Kiev, people took shelter in metro stations after warnings of drone attacks.
