Former US President Bill Clinton was admitted to MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington on Monday after reportedly suffering from a fever.

The 78-year-old was hospitalized in the afternoon "for tests and observation," Angel Urena, Clinton's deputy chief of staff, said in a statement.

"He remains in good spirits and is very grateful for the excellent care he is receiving," Urena said.

Clinton, a Democrat who served two terms as president from January 1993 to January 2001, spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago this summer and campaigned ahead of the November election for Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris' unsuccessful bid for the White House.

In the years since Clinton left the White House, he has had several health problems.

In 2004, he underwent heart surgery after experiencing constant chest pain and difficulty breathing. Clinton returned to the hospital for lung surgery in 2005, and in 2010 had two stents placed in a coronary artery.

In 2021, the former president was hospitalized for six days in California while being treated for an infection unrelated to COVID-19, while the pandemic was still at its peak./ REL
