The Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, has said that he currently sees no danger of any Russian attack on the territory of the alliance, but he sees the future with concern.

"There is no place for fear now", he said in an interview for the dpa news agency, when asked if NATO countries should be afraid of Russia, but he added that "if we don't spend more and produce more , we will have a serious problem in four, five years".

Russia has greatly expanded production for defense purposes since the start of the war in Ukraine.

According to Rutte, NATO allies are not doing much to combat this.

"We need to increase defense production, the defense industrial base," he said.

"We need to create new production lines, additional shifts, because we are not producing enough military equipment to defend ourselves in the long term."

Rutte also expects pressure from the elected American president, Donald Trump, who has threatened to withdraw from NATO during his first term, if the allies do not spend 2 percent of the gross domestic product on defense.

"He will ask us to do more. And he is right. We have to do more", said Rutte.

"NATO allies are committed to investing 2 percent of gross domestic product in defense. And many European countries have now achieved that goal," said Rutte.

However, he has said that he sees a problem in defense against Russia, unless spending increases even more.

Rutte has not said whether NATO allies should spend 3 percent of gross domestic product, or even more.

The decision on spending is expected to be taken at the next summit of the alliance, which will be held in June.

During the election campaign in the USA, Trump said that he considers it necessary for the member countries of the alliance to spend 3 percent of their budget.

There are reports that Trump may increase the demand to 5 percent./ REL
