Seoul: Over 1,000 North Koreans killed or wounded fighting for Russia

More than 1,000 North Koreans have been killed or wounded in Russia's war in Ukraine, South Korea said Monday, in contrast to Kiev, which put the figure at 3,000.

Pyongyang has deployed thousands of troops as reinforcements for the Russian military, including in the Kursk border region, where Ukrainian military forces seized territory earlier this year.

The General Staff of the South Korean army has said in a statement that it estimates that around 1,100 victims have suffered in the fighting, citing "various sources of information and intelligence".

Zelensky has warned days ago that the number of North Korean soldiers killed is high, and has warned against sending additional troops.

Seoul has said it has information that North Korea is "producing and donating self-destructing drones" to Russia, further aiding it in the war against Ukraine.

The latest findings are in line with a report by Seoul's National Intelligence Service, according to which Russia, in exchange for all the aid, could offer North Korea "modernization of conventional weapons."

The war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./REL
