Pope Francis opens the Holy Door to usher in the 2025 Jubilee

Pope Francis officially launched the 2025 Holy Year on Christmas Eve by opening the Holy Door at St. Peter's Basilica, an event expected to attract over 30 million pilgrims to the Italian capital, Rome.

Since the first holy year in 1300, passing through the Holy Door or one of three doors in other Papal Basilicas has allowed pilgrims to receive indulgences, meaning 'forgiveness of sins'.

The Holy Year 2025, with the theme of fostering hope and faith, is the second jubilee led by Pope Francis, after that of 2015.

Alongside the doors of Rome's main basilicas, the Pope will open a fifth door in a Roman prison for the first time, symbolizing an invitation to "all prisoners to look to the future with new faith".

About 7,000 people watched the opening of the Holy Door from inside the Basilica, while thousands more watched on big screens in St. Peter's Square and via broadcasts around the world.

Security in Rome has been strengthened, with 700 extra officers deployed and enhanced surveillance measures. Following a recent attack on a German Christmas market, police patrols around key venues have been stepped up.

Rome has spent two years of intensive preparations to welcome the wave of visitors expected during the Holy Year, although only a part of the 300 planned public and renovation projects have been completed./ CNA
