A Russian cargo ship called the Ursa Major sank in the Mediterranean Sea after an explosion ripped through the engine room, and two crew members are still missing, Russia's Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

The ship, built in 2009, was under the control of Oboronlogistika, a company part of the Russian Defense Ministry's military construction operations, which had previously announced that the ship was en route to the port of Vladivostok in the Russian Far East.

The Foreign Office's crisis center said 14 of the 16 crew members had been rescued and flown to Spain, but two were still missing. No information was released on the cause of the explosion in the engine room.

Russia's embassy in Spain, quoted by Russian state agency RIA, said it was investigating the circumstances of the drowning and was in contact with Spanish authorities.

The company that operated the ship declined to comment on the case, Reuters reports.

The Ursa Major ship was sanctioned by the United States in 2022 for its ties to the Russian military.

Some unverified images that are suspected to be of the moment of the sinking of the ship circulated on social networks.

The Spanish Maritime Rescue Service said it had received a distress signal from Ursa Major on Monday, when it was about 57 miles off the coast of Almeria.

Two ships and a helicopter were sent to the scene and the 14 surviving crew members were flown to the Spanish port of Cartagena.

The service quoted the crew as saying the ship was carrying empty containers as well as two harbor cranes on deck.

Later, a Russian warship arrived at the scene and took responsibility for the rescue operations./ REL
