Pope Francis calls for an end to the war in Ukraine

Pope Francis called today for talks between Ukraine and Russia to end the war that began with a large-scale attack on Moscow more than two years ago that has left tens of thousands dead.

In his Christmas Day speech, referring to the conflict in Ukraine, the Pope called for "finding the necessary courage to open the door to negotiations".

Speaking from the central balcony of St Peter's Basilica in front of thousands of people gathered in the square, the Pope said he wished "the sound of guns in war-torn Ukraine to stop".

He also called for a willingness to "dialogue and meet", so as he said "to achieve a just and lasting peace".

Pope Francis, who has been pope since 2013, was criticized by Ukrainian officials this year when he said the country must have the courage to negotiate an end to the war with Russia.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy ruled out the possibility of peace talks without restoring Ukraine's pre-war borders.

But Mr. Zelenskiy has shown an increasing willingness since the re-election of Donald Trump as president of the United States to enter into negotiations.

Earlier in December, Mr. Zelenskiy floated the idea of ??a diplomatic solution that would include what he called a "freeze" of the current battle lines and the deployment of foreign troops to Ukraine. Russia has demanded that Ukraine give up its ambitions to join the NATO military alliance.

Today, Pope Francis called for an end to conflicts, political, social or military, in countries such as Lebanon, Mali, Mozambique, Haiti, Venezuela and Nicaragua./ VOA
