Trump: Ready for "phase two" of sanctions on Russia over Ukraine conflict

US President Donald Trump said this Sunday that he is prepared to move forward with a second phase of sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine.

Asked at the White House if he was ready to take this step, Trump told reporters that he was.

"Are you ready to move to the second phase of sanctions against Russia?" a journalist asked.

 "Yes, I am," Trump replied.

Trump has so far postponed imposing additional measures, while keeping talks open with Moscow.

His latest comments point to a possible change, although he did not say what the next phase would involve.

Since taking office in January, Trump has said he will work to quickly end the conflict. The war in Ukraine has dragged on despite repeated US warnings of tougher sanctions./CNA
