Syrian Christians attend services/ Schools reopen a week after Assad's

Syrian Christians attended regular Sunday services for the first time since the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad a week ago.

As the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham took power last week, it sought to reassure Syria's minority groups that their way of life would not be threatened.

Before Assad's fall, historic minority religious groups, including Christians, worshiped freely, and some remain uneasy at the prospect of an Islamist government.

The streets in the Bab Touma neighborhood of Damascus were filled with Christian worshipers returning from church on Sunday morning, but few cared.

"We are scared, we are still scared," local resident Maha Barsa said after attending mass at the local Melkite Greek Catholic church.

Barsa said she had barely left her home since HTS took over a week ago, although she said nothing had happened to warrant her concern, adding: "Things are unclear."

In the coastal city of Latakia, a longtime Assad stronghold, Lina Akhras, secretary of the parish council at St. George's Greek Orthodox Cathedral, said Sunday that Christians were "comfortable" under his rule in terms of freedom of expression. faith, but they just wanted to live in peace and harmony.
