Iranian president vetoes strict hijab law
Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has used his veto power to block a tough law on women's headscarves that was passed by parliament.

He called on the Supreme Council for National Security to analyze the law.

The presidential adviser, Ali Rabiei, told the daily Hamshahri that this action was justified by the effect that the law would have on society.

The Supreme Council is the highest institution in the Islamic Republic, which makes decisions on security issues.

Pezheshkian hopes that this body will be able to soften the new law to some extent.

This law, approved by hard-line MPs, foresees high penalties and the impossibility of access to public services for women who do not fulfill the obligation to cover their heads.

Even harsher penalties are foreseen for influential figures, including bans on practicing the profession or traveling abroad, as well as confiscation of over 5 percent of assets.

Harsh criticisms of this law, even from the Government itself, have affected delays in its implementation.

Pezeshkaian is reported to be opposed, as he fears resistance in Iranian society and the possibility of a return to popular unrest.

Observers see the law as a major challenge between hard-line politicians and moderate forces, and if Pezheshkuan fails to prevail against hard-line figures, he will face criticism for not fulfilling campaign promises.

Many Iranian women in major cities are refusing to enforce the strict dress code imposed by Islamic authorities.

This trend is the result of the "Women, Life, Freedom" movement, which erupted in the fall of 2022.

The marches started after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was in police custody, on the grounds that she did not put the veil on her head properly./REL
