Promising data/ New lung cancer vaccine could cut deaths in half

The French biotechnology company has announced that its vaccine against certain types of lung cancer is effective in reducing patient mortality by up to 41 percent.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in Europe and the US, reports Euronews.

The results of the third phase of the clinical trial, which aims to evaluate the therapeutic benefits of the vaccine, are the last step before the drug is launched on the market, published in the journal "Annals of Oncology".

The vaccine was tested in patients with advanced malignant lung cancer, the most common type of lung cancer, as described by the American Institute for Cancer Research.

A total of 219 patients, all of whom had shown resistance to other treatments, took part in the study, which involved nine European countries and the US. The two patient groups consisted of 139 patients who received the vaccine and 80 who received conventional chemotherapy.

According to research, the "Tedopi" vaccine is effective in patients with the HLA-A2 gene, which is present in half of the world's population. It is applied first every three weeks, then every eight weeks for a year and then every 12 weeks.

Nicolas Poirier, the company's CEO, said the latest results from various trials "highlighted the promising possibility of this new therapeutic generation of vaccines".
