The Taliban administration in Afghanistan has called on international governments to lift sanctions and freeze Central Bank assets following an earthquake that killed more than 1,000 people and left thousands homeless.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Abdul Qahar Balkhi told Reuters in an interview that the world should give Afghans their basic right, which is the right to life, through the lifting of sanctions.
The magnitude 6.1 earthquake that struck the east of the country Wednesday morning destroyed 10,000 homes and injured about 2,000 people, highlighting the country's fragile health system and presenting a major test for the ruling Taliban.
The Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August 2021, but they are not recognized by the international community.
Western governments are particularly concerned about the rights of women and girls to work and study under Taliban rule./Euronews
