Smoking remains the leading cause of death in the US. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that the death toll from smoking is about 480,000 each year.

The initiative requires the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to develop and then publish a rule, which is likely to be opposed by the tobacco industry.

"Nicotine is highly addictive," said FDA Commissioner Robert Califf. "Making cigarettes and other combustible tobacco products less addictive will save lives." / DW
