Steve Scalise withdraws from the race for speaker of the House of

Republican Steve Scalise ended his bid to become speaker of the House of Representatives after failing to secure the necessary support within Republicans to win the post.

Mr. Scalise announced the decision to his Republican colleagues in a closed-door meeting late Thursday night.

The next steps remain uncertain, as the House of Representatives is currently in a deadlock while the Republican majority tries to elect a speaker following the ouster of Kevin McCarthy, thanks to an initiative pushed by some hard-line Republican lawmakers.

Nominated by the Republicans to run for speaker of the House of Representatives, just a day ago, lawmaker Steve Scalise ran into a familiar problem; skeptical conservative Republican colleagues, who refused to give him support. Without their votes, Mr. Scalise would not be able to secure the majority to win this post.

Many hard-line lawmakers, taking their cues from Donald Trump, have engaged in a protracted fight to replace Kevin McCarthy after his historic departure from office. They have said that even Majority Leader Scalise was not a better choice and that he should focus on his own health problems while battling cancer. So far, no date has been set for voting for the position of the head of the House.

The House of Representatives is entering its second week without a speaker and is essentially unable to function. Meanwhile, the political pressure is increasing on the Republicans to change course and restore majority control and ensure the normal functioning of the Chamber.

One of the reasons is related to the budget to finance the government, which if it does not happen, it risks shutting down within a month. Lawmakers also want Congress to make a strong statement of support for Israel in its fight against Hamas, but a bipartisan resolution has been sidelined because of the impasse in the House of Representatives. Likewise, the White House is expected to soon request money for Israel, Ukraine, and replenishing the American stockpile of weapons.

Democrats have backed their leader, Hakeem Jeffries, during other House Speaker elections and are expected to do the same this time. An adviser to Democratic leaders, who spoke on the condition that his name not be made public, said that Democrats are ready to support a compromise candidate between the two parties, but according to them, Republicans have not contacted them on this issue./ VOA
