The United States of America opposes efforts to equate the killing of the Kosovo sergeant, Afrim Bunjaku, with the attackers "who were involved in his murder".

This is what the spokesperson of the US Department of State, Mathew Miller, told Radio Free Europe, when asked about how the US considers the people who attacked the Kosovo Police in Banjska, Zveçan on September 24.

"We have been very clear: the US strongly condemns the coordinated and violent attacks on the Kosovo Police on September 24, and we express our condolences to the family of the Kosovo Police sergeant who was killed in the line of duty. We oppose attempts to equate the tragic death of Kosovo Police Sergeant [Afrim] Bunjaku with the death of individuals who were involved in the killing of a policeman. Those responsible must be brought to justice through a transparent investigative process. This investigation is ongoing," Miller said.

On September 24, the Kosovo Police was attacked in Banjska of Zveçan, while carrying out an operation to remove a barricade placed on the road.

As a result of the attack, Sergeant Afrim Bunjaku was killed and several other policemen were injured.

The suspected attackers - who according to the authorities in Kosovo were about 30 - took refuge in the monastery of Banjska and from there the clashes with the Police continued.

Three suspected attackers were killed during the exchange of fire, while four people have been arrested for this attack, which Kosovo considers terrorist and blames Serbia for it.

Belgrade has denied having a hand in this event.

On September 27, a day of mourning was announced in Serbia for the three Serbs killed in Banjska. This decision was also criticized by the European Union. The spokesperson of the bloc, Peter Stano, declared that "victims of terrorism cannot be equated with terrorists".

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vu?i?, said on September 27 that he can never describe as "terrorists" the members of the armed group that attacked the Kosovo Police.

Officials in Kosovo have said that the vice president of the Serbian List, Millan Radoicic, led and participated in the attack in the north.

According to the Serbian president, Radoicic - who is under US sanctions - will be interrogated by competent Serbian bodies./ REL
