The Security Council vote on the Gaza resolution is postponed again

The United Nations Security Council again postponed a vote on a draft resolution on the war between Israel and Hamas, diplomatic sources said Thursday.

The postponement to Friday came even as the United States, which has opposed a number of proposals during the drafting of the resolution, hinted it might support it in its current form.

The latest draft proposal calls for "urgent steps to immediately allow safe and unhindered humanitarian access and to create the conditions for a lasting cessation of hostilities," but does not foresee an immediate end to them.

US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield told reporters that "if the resolution is put to a vote as is, then we can support it". She denied that the draft resolution had been weakened.

"The draft resolution is very strong and is fully supported by the group of Arab countries," she said.

The diplomatic row at the United Nations in Manhattan, which caused the vote to be postponed several times this week, comes as conditions in Gaza have worsened and the death toll has risen.

"Apparently the US has made the most of the desire of other Council members to avoid a veto. But the latest option looks much weaker," said International Crisis Group analyst Richard Gowan.

The draft resolution, which has been amended in several key areas to ensure compromise, requires all parties to "allow and facilitate the use of all routes into and throughout the Gaza Strip, including border crossings... for humanitarian assistance ."

The members of the 15-member Security Council have been trying for days to find a common language for the resolution./ VOA
