The Czech police have given details about the attack on a university in Prague.

According to information published in foreign media, it is about 11 victims and dozens of injured people.

Police said the gunman had been "eliminated" after the attack at Charles University, on Jan Palach Square in the city centre.

Footage from the scene showed people hanging from the walls of the university building, several floors above.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala canceled commitments after the tragic event. An email to staff at Charles University's philosophy faculty, seen by Reuters, alerted staff to the shooting.

"Stay inside, don't move, if you are in the offices, close them and put the furniture in front of the door, turn off the lights", was the message addressed to the people inside the university.

Authorities said the entire square and several streets around the university were closed.

Charles University is located in the Old Town of Prague, about 500 meters from the historic Charles Bridge, a tourist magnet./ CNA
