There is no functioning hospital in the northern Gaza Strip, the World Health Organization said on Thursday, as it described dire scenes of abandoned patients begging for bread and water.

This agency of the United Nations for Health has said that there were personnel engaged in Al-Shifa and Al-Ahli hospitals in the north of Gaza.

"Our staff are at a loss for words to describe the catastrophic situation facing our patients and health workers," said Richard Peeperkorn, WHO representative for the Palestinian territory.

His comments came as diplomatic efforts to reach a humanitarian pause in the war that Hamas has said has left 20,000 people dead in Gaza - 70 percent of them women and children - have intensified.

Hamas, the Palestinian group that rules Gaza with a population of 2.3 million, has been declared a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

The war began after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, killing about 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking about 240 hostages.

The WHO has recently described Al-Shifa hospital, the largest in Gaza, as a "blood bath".

Last month, the Israeli army carried out an operation there, and as a result the object was destroyed by bombing.

The smallest hospital, Al-Ahli, was then the only place where operations were performed in the northern part of Gaza, but its director said that all services have been suspended, following raids by the Israeli army on Tuesday./ Rel
