Scientists: Climate change worsened the fires in Los Angeles

A scientific study has concluded that climate change was a major factor behind the hot, dry weather that caused the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.

The authors noted that the wildfire season in Los Angeles is getting longer as the rains that normally extinguish the flames have become rarer.

Scientists emphasize that these fires are very complex with multiple factors playing a role, but they are certain that climate change is making Los Angeles more prone to intense fire events.

"Climate change has increased the risk of devastating fires in Los Angeles," said Dr Clair Barnes, from Imperial College London, the study's lead author.

Santa Ana winds are strong winds that blow from the interior of California towards the coast.

About 30 people have died and more than 10,000 homes have been destroyed by the devastating fires that broke out in early January.

This new study examines what are called fire-prone conditions that can lead to dangerous fires./ CNA
