Two air incidents have been reported in the South China Sea, the US Pacific Fleet has announced. Initially, a US Navy MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter, which was conducting a "routine operation" from the aircraft carrier Nimitz, crashed in the South China Sea. The three people on board were rescued without injury.

About half an hour later, an F/A-18F Super Hornet fighter jet, also detached from the USS Nimitz, crashed in the same area. The two crew members managed to eject in time and were also rescued.

"All personnel involved are safe and in stable condition ," the US Pacific Fleet said in a statement, adding that the causes of the two accidents are under investigation.

The loss of a fighter jet and a helicopter in the South China Sea came as US President Donald Trump was on a tour of Asia, his first since returning to the White House.

Earlier this year, two F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets crashed from the aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman in the Red Sea, eight days apart, one during a landing procedure and the other during a maneuver to move it to the deck. /CNA
