US imposes new sanctions on Iranian officials

The United States imposed sanctions on Iranian officials on December 21, including the attorney general and key military officials.

This is the latest round of sanctions by Washington in response to the crackdown on protests that were sparked by the death in custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in September.

The US Treasury Department said it had imposed sanctions on Mohammad Montazeri, Iran's attorney general, accusing him of instructing courts in September to impose harsh sentences on scores of people arrested during the protests.

Uashingtoni po ashtu ka sanksionuar edhe dy zyrtarë të lartë të Forcave për Rezistencë të Iranit, Basij, një milici që ka lidhje me Gardën Revolucionare Islamike, që janë angazhuar në shtypjen e protestave. Në listë të sanksioneve janë edhe dy zyrtarë të Gardës.

“Ne dënojë përdorimin në rritje të dhunës nga regjimi iranian kundër popullit të tij, i cili po mbron të drejtat e tij njerëzore”, tha nënsekretari amerikan i Thesarit për Terrorizëm dhe Inteligjencë Financiare, Brian Nelson.

Nationwide protests in Iran are being assessed as the biggest challenge to the country's leadership since the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Iran has accused Western powers of inciting the unrest./ REL
