US and China conclude two-day military talks

The United States and China ended two days of military talks in Washington on Tuesday, the Pentagon announced. This is the latest engagement between the two countries since they agreed to revive communications between the two militaries.

US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed late last year to resume the engagement that was suspended by Beijing after then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in August 2022.

Michael Chase, deputy assistant secretary of defense for China, Taiwan and Mongolia, met with China's Major General Song Yanchao, deputy director of the central military commission's office for international military cooperation, the Pentagon announced. The meeting marks the 17th China-US defense policy coordination talks.

"The two sides discussed US-China relations in the field of defense. Dr. "Chase emphasized the importance of keeping the lines of communication open between the two militaries in order to prevent competition from degenerating into conflict," the Pentagon statement said.

The US Chief of Staff, General Charles Q. Brown, held a virtual conversation with his Chinese counterpart, General Liu Zhenli, last month.

Pentagon officials say communication between the two militaries is essential to prevent a miscalculation from alienating the conflict.

US officials have warned that even after some military communications are restored, it will take time to establish a functional dialogue between the two sides.

Washington and Beijing are at odds over many issues, from the future of democratically self-ruled Taiwan to territorial claims in the South China Sea.

Diplomatic relations are still improving after the US shot down a suspected Chinese spy balloon last February.

This weekend, Taiwan will hold presidential and parliamentary elections amid tensions with China, which has territorial claims to the island despite strong objections from the Taiwanese government./ VOA
