The Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, has called on the member states of the European Union (EU) to give more military support to Ukraine this year, which is fighting the Russian invasion.

Scholz made the calls during a press conference with Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Friedman on January 8 in Berlin.

"Arms shipments to Ukraine, planned by most EU member states now, are very small... I call on our allies in the European Union to also increase their efforts for Ukraine," he said. Scholz.

Germany is the second largest military backer of Ukraine, after the United States.

Ukraine has warned that the war and its public finances will be in grave danger if aid from the West is stopped.

Ukraine has seen little change in the line of control since the launch of the spring counter-offensive, and is now facing a gradual decline in aid from allies in Washington and Europe.

Meanwhile, Russia is continuing its attacks on Ukraine.

On January 8, the Russian military attacked regions of Ukraine with a barrage of rockets, killing at least four people, wounding more than 40 others, and causing damage to civilian infrastructure and economic facilities, Ukrainian officials said.

The Ukrainian military said air raid sirens were sounded in most of the country, including the capital Kiev, on January 8. /REL
