South Korea passes law banning dog meat trade

South Korea has passed a new law that aims to completely ban the slaughter and sale of dogs for meat by 2027.

This law aims to end the centuries-old tradition of eating dog meat.

According to the new law, it is forbidden to raise or slaughter dogs for food, just as it is not allowed to distribute or sell their meat.

Anyone found guilty of such an offense could end up in prison.

Recent polls have shown that more people now want it banned and most South Koreans no longer eat dog meat.

However, polls also show that one in three South Koreans still oppose the ban on dog meat, even though they don't eat it.

On Tuesday, the South Korean Parliament passed the law with 208 votes in favor and none against.

President Yoon Suk Yeol's government supports the dog meat ban, so passing the law was a formality.

"This law aims to help protect the values ??of animal rights, which mean respect for life and a harmonious coexistence between humans and animals," the legislation states.

This law has angered and irritated many farmers.

"This is a clear violation by the state, because they are infringing on our freedom to choose our profession. We cannot sit idly by," said Son Won Hak, a farmer and leader of the South Korean Farmers Association.

He announced that the farmers will send a petition to the Constitutional Court and protest. They will meet on Wednesday to discuss the next steps, he added./ REL
