Challenges of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

The UN Summit for Sustainable Development takes place in New York, where Chancellor Olaf Scholz also participates. This shows how important this agenda is to the German government.

The UN Summit on Sustainable Development aims, according to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, to a "global rescue plan". Guterres noted that only 15% of the sustainable development goals adopted in 2015 are likely to be achieved.

Ending poverty in all its forms is one of the 17 goals of the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The aim of the agenda is "To ensure resource mobilization, including cooperation for developing and least developed countries to implement programs and policies to end poverty in all its dimensions". World poverty has been halved since 2000 , yet one in ten people living in developing countries still live on less than $1.90 a day.

Poverty is much more than a lack of income

The goals of the 2030 agenda are to create development strategies at the national and regional levels that ensure men and women equal rights to economic resources, as well as access to services, ownership and control over land and other forms of ownership, in inheritance , in natural resources, appropriate new technologies and financial services, including microfinance. The reduction of poverty in the world shows that this is a success achieved by people. The World Bank has set new goals to end extreme poverty. But poverty is much more than a lack of income and resources to make a living. In addition to hunger and lack of sufficient food, poverty is also about limited access to education and other basic services,

Poverty indicators

The initiative for human development of Oxford University has defined in three sectors of life, which are health, education and standard of living, ten indicators that are measured to measure poverty. They are food and infant mortality, years of schooling, drinking water, housing, sanitation, electricity, cooking fuel.

When the person is deprived of 20 to 30 percent of these indicators, then he is affected by poverty.

The United Nations 2030 Agenda with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals is complex and not necessarily easy to understand. This is also the reason why it is difficult for him to penetrate the public for his awareness.

And yet the fact that Chancellor Olaf Scholz himself is participating in the UN Sustainability Summit in New York underlines how important this agenda is for the German government./ DW
