Serbia to sign gas import agreement with Russia in October

Serbia will sign a three-year gas import agreement with Russia next month, ensuring an annual supply of 2.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas, the head of the Serbian state gas company, Dusan Bajatovic, told Radio Television of Serbia on Tuesday.

Srbijagas chief Bajatovic announced that Serbia has already secured daily supplies of 2.5 million cubic meters of gas from Azerbaijan, and that it also receives 9.5 million cubic meters per day from Russia, Reuters reports.

He also added that Serbia's only gas reserve contains 780 million cubic meters of natural gas, with a possibility for an additional 200 million cubic meters, which could be secured from a storage facility in Hungary if necessary.

Serbia remains one of the few buyers of Russian natural gas in Europe, even as it seeks membership in the European Union.

The government has faced pressure from Western countries to align with EU sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, but has so far taken no action.

The Oil Industry of Serbia (NIS), whose majority shares are owned by Gazprom Neft and Russia's Gazprom, is seeking a seventh exemption to postpone US sanctions that would jeopardize the Serbian state's supply of crude oil./ REL
