Authorities in Moldova said they had carried out 250 raids and detained dozens of people as part of an investigation into an alleged Russian-backed plot to incite mass unrest and destabilize the country ahead of critical parliamentary elections.
The raids targeted more than 100 people and took place in several locations across the country.
Seventy-four people were detained for up to 72 hours, said Victor Furtuna, Moldova's chief prosecutor from the Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases.
Moldovan police said the riot plot was coordinated by the Russian Federation, through criminal elements.
Online disinformation aimed to discredit Moldova's pro-European government in the run-up to elections.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu and her Action and Solidarity Party hope to stay in power and keep Moldova, which is surrounded by Romania to the west and Ukraine to the east, on its path to European Union membership. /CNA
