American Secretary of the Treasury, meeting with the Chinese Prime Minister

United States Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen met today with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Beijing. Her visit is part of efforts to revive US-China relations, which have hit their lowest level in decades due to disagreements over technology, security and other issues. During the meeting, both officials expressed their willingness to improve communication between the two countries. The meeting follows the recent visit to Beijing of the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, the first by an American Secretary of State in five years.

The US Secretary of the Treasury, Janet Yellen, met today with the Prime Minister of China, Le Qiang.

The United States is seeking healthy competition with China based on rules that benefit both countries, rejecting a "winner-takes-all" approach, as Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said during a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Beijing.

"I hope this visit can foster more regular channels of communication between our two countries, and I expect our discussions to be held in this spirit," she said.

Ms Yellen's visit follows that of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who met Chinese President Xi Jinping last month in the highest-level US visit to Beijing in five years.

The two agreed to stabilize relations, but failed to agree on improving communications between the two countries' militaries.

Chinese Premier Li said Ms. Yellen's visit raised hope for the future of US-China ties.

"You have long been engaged in China-US relations, especially economic and trade relations. You are not just a participant, but also a builder of these relationships. I look forward to having the opportunity to exchange ideas with you and discuss the topics we are interested in," said Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang.

"The United States, in certain circumstances, will have to take actions that are intended to protect our national security, and we may disagree in these cases. But we must not allow any disagreement to lead to misunderstandings that unnecessarily worsen our bilateral economic and financial relations," said Mrs. Yellen.

The US diplomatic efforts are being made ahead of a possible meeting between President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping, shortly after the Group of 20 most developed countries meeting in New Delhi in September and the meeting within the framework of the Asian Economic Cooperation - Pacific planned in November in San Francisco./ VOA
