President Joe Biden will host Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson at the White House for talks as NATO leaders prepare for a high-level meeting in Lithuania.

Sweden is trying to join the NATO military alliance, a move influenced by Russian aggression in Ukraine. NATO leaders gave their approval for Sweden's admission in 2022, but Turkey and Hungary have yet to ratify Stockholm's request. For a country to become part of NATO, the acceptance process must be unanimous by the member countries.

Finland, which applied together with Sweden, was accepted as a member of the alliance in April this year.

"President Biden and Prime Minister Kristersson will discuss increased security cooperation and reiterate the position that Sweden should join NATO as soon as possible," White House spokeswoman Karine said. Jean-Pierre in a statement last week.

According to her, President Biden and Prime Minister Kristersson will also discuss China's activity, as well as climate change or new technologies.

Turkey has accused Sweden of being too soft on groups that Ankara considers terrorist organizations. As part of an agreement reached between Turkey, Sweden and Finland, Stockholm has adopted a series of reforms, including a new anti-terrorism law.
