Scholz does not change the position on Taurus missiles

The Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, has again expressed his opposition to the sending of long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine.

Scholz has faced harsh criticism from the conservative opposition and others for his refusal to deliver these missiles that Kiev has been repeatedly asking for.

The German leader reiterated his stance on the issue during Wednesday's debate in the lower house of the German parliament, the Bundestag, citing fears that the provision of these advanced weapons could draw Germany into direct conflict with Russia.

"Sobriety is not something that can be classified as a weakness, as some do, but it is something that the citizens of this country have the right to have," said the social democrat.

He again said that supplying Ukrainian forces with Taurus missiles would require the involvement of German soldiers to help them use these weapons. Opposition politicians and some members of Scholz's tripartite coalition have questioned this claim.

During the debate, Scholz argued that Germany should not hand over control of the Taurus missiles, which in theory could hit targets deep inside Russian territory, including Moscow.

However, in order to maintain control over how Ukraine would use the missiles, Scholz argued that German soldiers stationed in either Ukraine or Germany would have to be involved in controlling the targets these missiles would hit. .

Germany is the second country, after the United States, that has offered the greatest aid to Ukraine, which is facing the invasion launched by Russia in February 2022./ REL
