The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, said on Wednesday that Russia is ready to use nuclear weapons, if its citizenship, sovereignty or independence are threatened.

He, however, said he hopes the United States will refrain from actions that could cause nuclear conflict.

This statement by Putin is another direct warning to the West, before the presidential elections, in which he is almost certain to win a sixth term as president.

Speaking in an interview on state television that aired Wednesday morning, Putin described US President Joe Biden as a veteran politician who understands the potential dangers of escalation, and said he does not think the world is going towards a nuclear war.

At the same time, he said that Russia's nuclear forces are on full alert and that "from a technical-military point of view, we are ready".

Putin said that Moscow is ready to use nuclear weapons, in case "the existence of the Russian state, our sovereignty and independence" is threatened.

The Russian leader has repeatedly spoken of a readiness to use nuclear weapons since Moscow launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The most recent such threat came during a speech to the nation in February, when he warned the West that deepening its involvement in the war in Ukraine risks provoking a nuclear war.

Asked in the interview if he ever thought about using nuclear weapons on the battlefield in Ukraine, Putin emphasized that there was no need for such a thing.

He also expressed confidence Moscow will achieve its goals in Ukraine and kept open the possibility of talks, underlining that strong guarantees from the West are needed for a possible deal.

Putin said the increase in Ukrainian drone strikes inside Russia in recent days is part of efforts to derail a three-day presidential election in Russia, which starts on Friday, in which he is almost certain to win.
