Netanyahu: We will continue the military offensive in Rafah

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that Israel will continue its military offensive in Rafah, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, despite international pressure.

The voices that are asking Israel not to enter Rafah have increased. Rafah is one of the last places in the Gaza Strip that has remained relatively safe and where 1.5 million people have found refuge.

"We will achieve the goal in Rafah, while avoiding harm to the civilian population," declared Mr. Netanyahu in a video speech at the conference of the pro-Israel organization AIPAC in Washington.

Meanwhile, White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said Tuesday that President Joe Biden will not support an Israeli military operation in Rafah unless civilians are protected.

He said the White House has yet to see such a credible plan.

According to Mr. Sullivan, President Biden believes that the path to peace and stability in the region "is not secured by targeting Rafah, where there are 1.3 million people, in the absence of a credible plan for the population there."

Mr Netanyahu made the comments as European Union leaders plan to urge Israel not to launch a military ground operation in Rafah, according to a preliminary document ahead of a meeting of the bloc.

"The European Council urges the Israeli government not to undertake the ground operation in Rafah, where over a million Palestinians are currently seeking refuge from fighting and access to humanitarian aid," according to the draft document seen by Reuters news agency.

This document must be approved by the leaders of the 27 EU member states during the meeting on March 21 and 22./ VOA
