Accusations of obstruction of justice/ Senator Menendez declares his innocence

Mr. Menendez appeared at a hearing before Judge Sidney Stein in New York City. Senator Menendez was accused last year of accepting bribes from businessmen in New Jersey to obstruct law enforcement investigations they were facing and of acting illegally in favor of the Egyptian government.

US Sen. Bob Menendez pleaded not guilty Monday to obstruction of justice charges as the New Jersey Democratic lawmaker's corruption trial approaches.

Mr. Menendez appeared at a hearing before Judge Sidney Stein in New York City.

Senator Menendez was accused last year of accepting bribes from businessmen in New Jersey to obstruct law enforcement investigations they were facing and of acting illegally in favor of the Egyptian government. He has previously pleaded not guilty to these charges.

On March 5, a new indictment said Senator Menendez in 2023, through his former attorneys, falsely conveyed to federal prosecutors in Manhattan that the senator believed home and car loan payments two businessmen had made for his wife, it was a loan, not a bribe.

The senior senator from New Jersey has resisted calls to resign, including from his fellow Democrats. He temporarily stepped down as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee after the allegations were made last year.

The Nov. 5 election will also decide his Senate seat, and many New Jersey Democrats have entered the race to replace him. The Senate is evenly split 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans, but Vice President Kamala Harris gives Democrats the upper hand when necessary.

Senator Menendez, his wife Nadine Menendez and businessmen Wael Hana and Fred Daibes will go on trial on May 6. Nadine Menendez, Hana and Daibes also pleaded not guilty on Monday./ VOA
