Biden and Trump secure the party nominations for the November presidential

US President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump were named the presidential nominees of their respective parties on Wednesday after scoring decisive victories in the primaries, paving the way for a rematch in the November election. .

The outcome of Tuesday's primaries in states like Georgia, Mississippi and Washington has never been in doubt. Neither Democrat Biden nor Republican Trump faced strong opponents.

Victories in the primaries give them the sufficient number of delegates needed to formally elect a candidate for president at the national conventions in the summer.

Now there is no doubt that in the November elections, Biden and Trump will face each other again. But their path forward will not be easy. Biden, 81, is already the oldest president in the history of the United States, while Trump, 77, faces four criminal cases. The rematch between the two – the first between two US presidents since 1912 – could deepen political and cultural divisions over the next eight months, the Associated Press reports.

Biden celebrated the nomination through a communiqué, in which he described Trump as a serious threat to democracy.

Trump, Biden said, is "leading a campaign of revenge, revenge and anger that threatens America."

While Trump, in a video posted on social networks, celebrated what he called "a great victory".

"But now, we have to get back to work, because we have the worst president in the history of our country," Trump said of Biden.

"We will waste no time celebrating. We will celebrate in eight months, after the elections are over," he added.

Neither Trump nor Biden have an easy way forward.

Trump faces four criminal charges, including trying to overturn the outcome of the 2020 election, which he lost, and mishandling classified documents. He also faces questions about political plans and relationships with some of the world's most dangerous dictators. Trump met privately on Friday with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who has subverted democracy in his country.

Biden, who would turn 86 at the end of next term, is working to reassure a skeptical electorate that he is still mentally and physically fit to thrive in the most important job in the world.

He faces discord within his party's base, where there is resentment that he has not done more to stop Israel's war against Hamas - the US-designated terrorist group - in Gaza. Activists and religious leaders in Washington urged Democrats to vote "undecided" as a sign of anger./ Voa
