The European Parliament approves the Law on Artificial Intelligence

The European Parliament (EP) today approved the Law on Artificial Intelligence, which aims to protect fundamental rights, democracy, the rule of law and environmental sustainability in AI-related fields, encouraging innovation and establishing Europe as a leader in this field.

The new law was supported by 523 deputies, while 46 were against and 49 abstained from voting, according to the website of the European Parliament.

Based on the new rules, some AI applications are prohibited that, according to the legislators, threaten the rights of citizens, and this category also includes systems that perform categorization based on people's biometric data.

Law enforcement agencies will only be able to use "real-time" biometric identification (RBI) systems in very narrowly defined exceptional cases, such as searching for a missing person or preventing a terrorist attack.

The use of so-called "post-remote RBI" systems is considered a high-risk situation that is possible only with the approval of the special court. Artificial intelligence-based applications that can recognize emotions will be banned in the workplace and schools.

General-purpose artificial intelligence (GPAI) systems and the GPAI models on which they are based must meet several transparency requirements, including compliance with EU copyright laws and publishing detailed summaries of their content. used for training.

The law says that audio and video content created with the help of artificial intelligence ("deepfakes") must be clearly marked./ CNA
