Scholz calls to fight anti-Semitism
German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called on all citizens to defend Germany's democracy and fight anti-Semitism as the country marks the 79th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz during World War II.

Since 1996, Germany has marked January 27 as Holocaust Remembrance Day.

"Every day is 'never again,'" Scholz said during his weekly videocast. "January twenty-seven calls to all of us: Be visible, be vocal. Against anti-Semitism, against racism and for our democracy".

On that day in 1945, Soviet Red Army troops freed nearly 7,000 prisoners at Auschwitz, a concentration camp in German-occupied Poland. The Nazis killed over 1 million people in this concentration camp, most of them Jews.

A few days before the liberation, the Germans had evacuated tens of thousands of prisoners. They were evacuated on foot, on what is now known as the Death March, as many prisoners died of exhaustion and cold.

The Nazis killed 6 million European Jews during the Holocaust.

Saturday, as people in Germany lay wreaths and light candles at memorials dedicated to victims of Nazi terror. The German chancellor said that the state must continue to bear responsibility for "this crime against humanity".

He emphasized that the fight against any type of anti-Semitism and the fight for democracy is not something that can be done only by the Government, but requires the support of all Germans.

Scholz specifically referred to the threat posed by the rise of far-right populists in Germany, Europe and around the world. According to him, they are "sowing fear and hatred".

In Germany, according to polls, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has grown, ranking second with around 23 percent support./REL
