US and Britain sanction senior Houthi officials after Red Sea attacks

The United States and Britain said Thursday they had imposed coordinated sanctions on four Houthi rebel figures for their role in supporting and organizing attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea.

Houthi attacks, backed by Iran, have disrupted global trade and raised concerns about rising inflation.

These actions have deepened concerns that the consequences of the Israel-Hamas war could destabilize the Middle East.

Among the sanctioned persons are the Minister of Defense of the Houthis, Mohamed Nasser al-Atifi, the commander of the naval forces of the Houthis, Muhammad Fadl Abd Al-Nabi, the chief of the naval defense forces, Muhammad Ali al-Qadiri and Muhammad Ahmad al- Talib, whom both governments have described as director of procurement for the Houthi rebels.

"Together with our allies, we will continue to target those responsible for the unacceptable and illegal actions of the Houthis, which endanger the lives of innocent seafarers and prevent the delivery of aid to the people of Yemen," said the British Foreign Secretary, David Cameron, who is visiting the Middle East.

The sanctions are aimed at preventing the Houthis from carrying out attacks in the Red Sea, Britain has said.

The US Treasury has said that al-Atifi has publicly warned that the Houthis will turn the Red Sea into a graveyard in response to US-led coalition strikes against Yemen aimed at securing commercial traffic. Al-Talibi is involved in efforts to smuggle Iran-supplied weapons, missiles, drones into Yemen, the US has said.

With these sanctions, the US freezes all assets that the targeted individuals have on US soil, and prohibits Americans from having contact with them.

Britain has said that the sanctioned persons will have their assets frozen, an arms embargo will be placed on them and their travel to it will be prohibited./ Rel
