It happens for the first time / How a prisoner was executed with nitrogen in America

Authorities in Alabama executed convicted murderer Kenneth Smith on Thursday, who was forced to inhale nitrogen gas.

This is a new method of capital punishment since the beginning of lethal injections in the US four decades ago, reports "Reuters". 

Smith, convicted of a 1988 murder, was an inmate who had already survived an execution attempt. In November 2022, Alabama officials halted his execution by lethal injection after trying for hours to insert an intravenous needle into his body.

Alabama has touted asphyxiation as a simpler alternative for prison systems struggling to find either the veins or the drugs needed for lethal injections.

Human rights groups, United Nations torture experts and Smith's lawyers had sought to prevent it, saying the method was dangerous, experimental and could lead to a painful death or non-fatal injury./ CNA
