The UN launches an investigation into several workers who are suspected of

The United Nations agency for Palestinians (UNRWA) announced on Friday that it has launched an investigation into some of its staff suspected of involvement in the October 7 Hamas attacks in Israel, and said it has severed relations with them.

"The Israeli authorities have provided UNRWA with information about the suspected involvement of some UNRWA employees in the horrific attacks in Israel on October 7," said Philippe Lazzarini, head of this agency.

He added that in order to protect the agency's ability to provide humanitarian aid, "I have decided to immediately terminate the contracts of these staff members and launch an investigation so that we can find out the truth without wasting time."

UNRWA, founded in 1949 after the first Arab-Israeli war, provides services including education, medical care and humanitarian aid to Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.

UNRWA has provided aid and used its buildings to shelter people fleeing the bombing and Israeli ground offensive in Gaza following the October 7 attacks, in which Israel says 1,200 people were killed and abducted. 253 others.

"These shocking allegations come as over two million people in Gaza depend on vital aid that the agency has been providing since the war began," Lazzarini said.

Israel's war has devastated most of Gaza and killed more than 25,000 Palestinians.

UNRWA - which received donations mostly from the United States, Germany, the European Union and Sweden in 2022 - has repeatedly said it is losing the ability to provide humanitarian aid to people in Gaza./ REL
