China has sent over 30 warplanes and a group of warships to Taiwan, the island's Defense Ministry said on January 27.

The military pressure comes after the announcement that senior US and Chinese representatives will meet in the Thai capital, as the two countries aim to ease tensions.

The Chinese military sent 33 warplanes, including SU-30s, and six navy ships around Taiwan between 6:00 a.m. on Friday and 6:00 a.m. on Saturday. Of those, 13 fighter jets crossed the line into the Taiwan Strait - which is an unofficial border between the island and China.

Taiwan said it has been monitoring the situation and has deployed its forces in response to China's activities.

China claims the self-governing island of Taiwan as part of its territory and in recent years has increased activities around the island, sending planes and ships. Taiwan said seven Chinese balloons flew either over the island or through its airspace, days after the island elected Lai Ching-te as its new president. Lai's Democratic Progressive Party has campaigned for self-determination, social justice and opposed China's threats.

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi are both in Bangkok for talks, but it is still unclear whether the two will meet, or have already met.

The USA and China have disagreements on a number of issues, starting from the economic and geopolitical ones./ REL
