Nearly 2 million people evacuated as Typhoon Ragasa slams into southern China

About 2 million people in southern China were evacuated as a powerful typhoon slammed into one of the world's most populous coasts, causing deadly flooding in Taiwan.

Ragasa slammed into the financial hub of Hong Kong and parts of southern China on Wednesday as it swept swiftly across remote islands in the Philippines and mountainous regions of Taiwan.

It began to lose strength and was downgraded to a severe tropical storm after causing a series of damages, causing landslides, flooding and large waves in China's Guangdong province, where major cities such as Shenzhen and Guangzhou are located.

In Taiwan, at least 17 people have died and rescue teams are trying to find 17 others still missing as of Wednesday afternoon local time, after a dam holding back a recently formed lake collapsed the day before, releasing 68 million tons of water and flooding the nearby town of Guangfu./ CNA
